PNG CHIEFS’ GENERAL MANAGER ARRIVES IN PORT MORESBY

NEWLY appointed PNG Chiefs franchise General Manager Michael Chammas has arrived at the Jacksons International Airport this afternoon (Monday), ahead of scheduled announcements, expected to be announced tomorrow (Tuesday) at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.


Incoming General Manager Chammas and Chiefs Chief Executive Officer Lorna McPherson will announce to the country, the progress and team’s recruitment drive towards the preseason in 2027 and entering the field of play in 2028.


Both Chammas and McPherson will address the media tomorrow in a planned media conference tomorrow morning, where the main points of discussions regarding the talent identification programs, the recruitment drive and official ribbon-cutting of these plans and others to get off the ground stating this year.


Chammas, a decorated NRL-reporter of Sydney Morning Herald and Nine was confirmed to the role by Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman, Peter V’landys.

ARL Chairman, Peter V’landys also confirmed the appointment of Lorna Mcpherson earlier this year, adding that it was a crucial step in establishing the foundations of the new franchise.

Lorna brings with her over 16 years of corporate and sporting experience in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and has held senior positions with Digicel Pacific as well as board positions with the Digicel Foundation, PNG RFL, the Port Moresby Nature Park and the European Business Council of PNG.

Lorna has worked extensively in developing grass roots programs for Rugby League in PNG and played a critical role in building out the domestic competition, now known as the Digicel Exxon Mobil Cup.

The appointment of Lorna marks the first step in a long list of priorities for the club and as a board we look forward to working closely with Lorna and her executive team to build a strong foundation and ensure the Chiefs are set up for success.
