THE provincial capital of East Sepik, Wewak today chose a quieter way to remember the life of Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, founding father and first Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea.

Speaking to the FM100 Newsroom, local Mp Stanley Mutz Samban stated that this year, Wewak town opted to take a more respectful and quiet approach in paying respect to the country’s first PM.

The MP stated that usually, the Provincial Government goes ahead to prepare for these events, but for this year they had not indicated whether to commemorate the life of the Grand Chief spectacularly.

Samban stated that this morning a small Virgil was staged, where a good number of citizens turned up to honour and pay respects to the Grand Chief. He added that apart from other parts of the country, Wewak is still and observing the sacrifice and work of the founding fathers in pushing for self-determination.
