  • ALLUVIAL MINING SECTOR NEEDS TO GO INTO MECHANIZED MINING

    WITH over 200,000 alluvial miners in the mining Sector around the country the Sector needs to go into Mechanized Mining.

    This call was made by Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) Manager of Wau Small Scale Mining Training Center Andrew Onguglo during his presentation at the PNG Resources Week Day 2 Program.

    Mr. Onguglo said out of the 200,000 plus Alluvial miners in the country MRA has issued 641 tenements which means only certain parts of the country are legally Mining as Alluvial miners.

    He says the sector has seen a drop in gold production over the years to improve this there should be a shift in the mining techniques from standard to mechanized.

    He also says there should be an increase in regulation and compliance efforts with appropriate policy and legislative amendments for the Alluvial Mining industry.

  • WAU-WARIA MP Marsh Narawec has called on the Government to Formalise the Alluvial Mining Sector.

    The pioneer MP made this call during his presentation this morning at the PNG Resources Week Day 2 being held at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG).

    Mr. Narawec said the Alluvial Mining Sector has the potential to lift the economy of the country.

    He says if this Sector is formalised it will bring up to K10 million foreign exchange per annum.

    He says 90 percent of the people in his district receive their income from this sector with everyone in the District doing Alluvial Mining.

    He further adds that the sector creates income generation, job creation, and with increase of cash flow which leads to economic development.

  • LOCAL BUSINESSMAN CALLS ON GOVT TO BUILD MANUFACTURING PLANT FOR MECHANIZED MINING

    LOCAL Businessman and Managing Director of Tribal Mining Limited who has been in the Alluvial Mining industry for over 20 years has called on the government to build a Manufacturing Plant for mechanized Mining in the Alluvial Mining Sector.

    Mr. Justin Parker said this during the Session on Artisanal and Small Mining at the PNG Resources Week, Day 2 Program.

    Mr. Parker said the Alluvial Mining Sector needs to be developed because the potential this industry has is unbelievable.

    He says if this industry is developed it can raise K3 – K7 billion annually which can contribute to the economy.

    He says in this industry every toea a Papua New Guinean makes stays back and benefits the citizens and the nation prospers.

    He adds that foreigners are taking the opportunity and tapping into this industry.

    He further adds that today the gold price is at its highest so Papua New Guineans can tap into the Artisinal Mining Sector as it is not complex.

    Mr. Parker says this industry alone has value over other commodities like coffee, cocoa, copra amongst others as it can bring in 95 percent of revenue.

    THE Inaugural PNG Resources Week hosted by the PNG Chamber of Resources and Energy (PNG CORE) is currently underway at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG).

    The four-day event will incorporate the Community Affairs and National Content Conference and Expo (CANCONEX), PNG Resources Career Fair, PNG Resources Summit, and ending it off with the PNG Resources Week Gala Dinner.

    The Prime Minister James Marape officially opened the Summit with his keynote address.

    PM Marape called on the Mining and Energy Sector to take his people with them.

    Marape explained that the resource companies operating in the resource areas around the country must involve landowners in their operations as this will be an integral part of development.

    He says the Mining and Energy sector in the country has been around for over a hundred years with the first gold mined in Bulolo in Morobe Province.

    He says the sector has contributed to the development of the country in terms of nation building with 80 percent of the revenue collected from this industry.

    Meanwhile, PNGCORE President Anthony Smare thanked the Prime Minister for accepting the invitation and officially opening the Summit.

  • FORMER GOVERNOR AIMS TO EXPAND SIMBU’S ECONOMY BASE

    Former Simbu governor and regional candidate Noah Kool addressed a crowd in Kundiawa on his focus to expand the economic base of the province.

    In a rally in town considered emotional, the former one-term governor from 2012-2017 said the Simbu Government needs additional money from the K10 million Provincial Services Improvement Program (PSIP) funds from the National Government.

    Mr Kool told a capacity crowd that in his five-year term he had set the stage for economic expansion through the airport relocation from Kundiawa to Kup in Kerowagi district.

    Among other notable impact projects that he initiated that never went off the ground in the last four years were the Chuave Limestone project, the road connection to Karamui, and the Toa Hydro project that through feasibility study outcome can sell electricity to Australia.

    Mr Kool said other social services which he initiated that got little government support were the Simbu Teachers College and the Nursing college in town.

    He said Simbu has little cash crops, nil extractive industry, and limited human resource exports.

    That was why the need to expand the economic base of the province is paramount to support basic social services in the province and initiate economic impact projects for capacity building to the people.

    Mr Kool said he would focus on his policy platform once he retains the governorship seat in this election.

    The crowd went wild after his 30-minute address and forcefully carried him into his campaign vehicle.

  • MAMOTA DRUG RAID NETS THREE SUSPECTS

    THREE suspects were apprehended on Monday night, during a drug raid in the Mamota Section in Kimbe West New Britain Province.

    The successful raid led by Mamota Rural Police Station Commander Constable Getrude Mou, saw the arrest of 28-year-old Jucky Sungi, from Talemanda Village in the Kompiam Ambum district of Enga Province, Jab Bamu, 38 years from Morobe/WNB and Junior Paul Wasa 25 years old from Numbunge village in the Wosera Gawi district of East Sepik Province.

    The trio were arrested, for having drugs or marijuana, and harmful weapons.

    According to Constable Mou, the raid was executed at 10 pm on Monday upon tip off from sources, of the ongoing drug smuggling in the area.

    Constable mou says drugs are the main cause of Law & Order problems in the community of Mamota, Central Nakanai and W.N.B.P, many of the youths have gone crazy, and are collecting rubbish around Kimbe town because of drugs (Cannabis).

  • COURT ADJOURNED GOROKA MP AIYE TAMBUA’S CASE TO JULY, SUPPORTERS HARRASSED MEDIA

    GOROKA MP Aiye Tambua to appear at the Committal Court in Waigani, after two months, while allowing police to gather victims’ statements and more information regarding his alleged sexual offense case.

    In a hearing this morning, Thursday, 9th of May 2024, presiding magistrate Paul Puri Nii moved the matter to Tuesday, 9th of July 2024, for further directions.

    Magistrate Nii also noted that the victims are currently out of the country and that would require ample time for them (victims) to hand their statements to the police, while police also need to fast-track their investigations, which will then formulate the police hand-up brief to be presented to the Court.

    While Court duly upholds the previous submission or motion from Mr. Tambua through his lawyer Edward Sasingian especially on freedom of movement, the court refuses the second motion to bar media from reporting.

    Magistrate Nii said Mr. Tambua can travel within the country for the next-two months as duly elected member of the parliament and can perform his duly task and functions, however he may seek Court’s approval to travel overseas.

    Mr. Tambua is facing a 26-counts of alleged sexual abuse against his children and family members and is out on K10 000 bail.

    Meanwhile, Magistrate Nii disputed the second motion to bar media, adding that media is everyone’s freedom, the eyes and ears of every Papua New Guineans within the country and abroad, and that cannot be stopped.

    However, while outside of the Court House today, a TV Wan News Crew member (camera-man) was verbally commanded to take his camera off to avoid taking any picture or footages, while Mr. Tambua was making his way out of the court room to his car, at the car-park.

    Whilst walking to the carpark, at the Waigani Court vicinity, Mr. Tambua was escorted and seen barricaded by his supporters to prevent the media from taking photographs or videos.

    THE sixth straight win of the Enga Mioks comes to an end after Port Moresby Vipers hold them 18 points a piece to fulltime at Port Moresby’s National Football Stadium this afternoon.
