The Markham Smart Farmers Association is striving to expand rice production in Markham District, despite hurdles in irrigation and mechanization. Inspired by the Trukai Smart Farmer Program, a collaboration between Trukai Industries Ltd and the Papua New Guinea University of Technology, the association has adopted new farming techniques to boost yields and improve crop management.

“Farmers with irrigation are seeing excellent results, producing high-quality rice right here in Markham,” said John Gaif, President of the Association. “But the cost of building irrigation systems is out of reach for many, limiting our district-wide growth.”

Currently, only one tractor serves the entire district, making rice cultivation labor-intensive and slowing productivity. To address these challenges, the association is partnering with organizations like the Fresh Produce Development Agency and GrowPNG and is urging government support to expand infrastructure and resources.

Through ongoing partnerships, the association aims to empower local farmers and establish rice farming as a sustainable and profitable venture in the region.
