WANTOK WALLET TO IMPACT RURAL FARMERS

By Nigel MADO
Bougainville’s cocoa and copra farmers are experiencing a financial revolution with the introduction of BSP’s Wantok Wallet. The mobile banking service is set to enable farmers to receive payments and conduct transactions without needing a traditional bank account.
BSP Buka Deputy Branch Manager, Robert Eric, explained that this will be useful for farmers who have limited access to banking services due to the remoteness of their villages. The Wantok Wallet he said, will also provide them with a direct, secure way to receive and transfer money using their mobile phones.
Previously, farmers faced issues such as receiving incomplete payments when sending money to family members.
With Wantok Wallet, they can now transfer funds instantly, ensuring they receive the full amount. The service is expected to streamline financial transactions and empower local agricultural communities.
Meanwhile, Diga Trading, a Kokopau-based business, has emerged as one of Papua New Guinea’s top BSP cash agents, facilitating financial services for local communities. The business was selected as one of 22 nationwide locations to roll out BSP’s OneTalk Wallet roadshow.
Desmond Diga, the owner of Diga Trading, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “We’ve been operating for less than a year, and to be recognized at this level is a privilege. The demand for banking services here is high, and we are committed to bridging the gap.”
As an agent, Diga Trading provides essential financial services, including cash deposits and withdrawals, which were previously difficult to access for many residents.
