LAW and order issues escalates in East Sepik Province and communities are increasingly alarmed by a surge in criminal activities.

East Sepik Province, known for its serene landscapes and vibrant cultures, is now grappling with a troubling rise in crime and residents from various districts have voiced their concerns over incidents ranging from armed robberies to violent assaults.

“It’s become unsafe, especially at night. We hear about attacks and thefts almost every week,” says a concerned local from Wewak.

The surge in criminal activities has been attributed to several factors. Assistant Commissioner of Police for Border Command, Peter Philip, highlighted the proliferation of homemade weapons and alcohol abuse as primary contributors to the violence.

He expressed concerns over the limited police manpower, stating that with an estimated population of 200,000, the province has only 280 police officers, making effective law enforcement challenging.

In response to the escalating situation, East Sepik Governor Allan Bird has announced plans to intensify police operations.

He emphasized the need for community leaders to take proactive roles in addressing these challenges, expressing shock that the crime levels in the province now rival those of major urban centers like Port Moresby.

Governor Allan Bird: said “East Sepik can’t afford to have our hard-working people targeted in this manner. It’s imperative that we all come together to restore peace and order in our communities.”

Recent incidents have further underscored the urgency of the situation.

Community organizations are stepping up to address these challenges and as such β€œThe Ban Wire Catapult movement” a local NGO, has been actively promoting peace and justice through outreach programs.

They advocate for empowering both elected and traditional leaders to enforce law and order, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in curbing the violence.

As East Sepik Province confronts these escalating challenges, the collective efforts of government authorities, law enforcement, and community members will be crucial in restoring safety and stability to the region.
