Nine people, including a child, were rescued after their dinghy overturned near Tabalip Point in Astrolabe Bay, Madang Province, on Saturday, March 15, 2025.

The 23-foot fiberglass boat, powered by a 75-horsepower engine, ran into rough waters at around 5:40 PM while traveling between Madang Town and Raicoast.

Acting Madang Provincial Police Commander, Superintendent Robert Baim, confirmed the rescue and praised the quick response from local authorities and community members.

PPC Baim said the combined efforts of the Madang Rapid Response Network, police, and local boat operators saved lives in very challenging conditions.

Rescue operations began immediately after a distress call was received. Teams from the Madang Water Police and PNG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (PNGMRCC) deployed rescue boats from Ganglau Village and Basamuk Refinery. Despite bad weather, the search continued into the night and resumed early Sunday morning. By sunrise, all survivors had been found and taken to Modilon General Hospital for treatment.

The survivors, who lost their belongings, are now receiving shelter and support. Authorities are investigating the cause of the capsizing, and Baim urged travelers to heed weather warnings and follow safety precautions at sea.
