An inmate from Konje village, Orobay LLG in Popondetta, Michael Aiga, 60, was released yesterday after serving 12 years in Biru prison.
Returning to his home village with cocoa seedlings, Aiga is set to start a new chapter in his life.
The Cocoa roll out program is an initiative that was established in 2019 under Biru Correctional Services Rehabilitation Program in partnership with the Northern Division of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL) .
Aiga is the 15th person to receive cocoa seedlings since the program began in 2019. Fourteen previous inmates are already benefiting from this opportunity.
CS Representative, Major Grabriel Cornelius, explained that this initiative aims to support long-term inmates by providing them with opportunities to start fresh in the outside world.
“The cocoa seedling roll out program helps former inmates reintegrate by keeping them busy and involving local youth in planting cash crops like cocoa, oil palm, and vanilla.”
Major Gabriel emphasized that the rehabilitation program must benefit the youth as well, ensuring they are included in the process and in order to avoid unlawful activities.
“The initiative encourages former inmates to engage in agricultural activities, allowing them to contribute to their community and earn a sustainable income.”
Meanwhile, Aiga expressed his joy of being reunited with his family and community. He is hopeful for positive change in his community with the cocoa rehab program in place.
