One hundred police reservists, including 15 women, have successfully completed a four-week intensive training program at the Gusap Training Centre in Morobe Province.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Police Commissioner Dr. Philip Mitna highlighted the importance of the reservist program in addressing ongoing police manpower shortages.

“The reservist program was revived before the 2022 elections to support security efforts, particularly in provinces with significant law enforcement challenges,” Dr. Mitna said.

While the government has supported recruitment efforts, he noted that Bomana Police College can only train 500 officers each year, making the reservist program essential in bolstering the police force.

“Reservists serve as a backup force for regular officers, and provincial governments play a vital role in providing support,” he added.

Dr. Mitna also commended Morobe for embracing the program when other provinces declined participation.

The new reservists, who have full arresting powers and must uphold the same disciplinary standards as regular officers, will be deployed across the province to support law enforcement efforts.

With a workforce of just 6,500 active officers and many nearing retirement, Dr. Mitna emphasized that new recruits are crucial for strengthening the police force, especially with the 2027 election approaching.

“Morobe is preparing for the 2027 election, and this program is key to ensuring security,” he concluded.
