MAN KILLED IN CAR CRASH IN MADANG

A man has died in a car crash outside Madang, and police suspect alcohol may have been involved. The incident has prompted warnings for drivers to be extra careful during the election period.
The crash happened around midday on Wednesday, June 12, near Alemo Junction along the Bruce Jeff Cott Highway, about 21km from Madang town.
According to police, the brown Toyota Landcruiser was heading back from Walium with four people inside. The driver reportedly tried to overtake another vehicle but lost control and ended up in a roadside drain.
One of the passengers, 40-year-old Lepai Pauli from Kupalis village in Wabag, Enga Province, is believed to have jumped from the moving vehicle and died at the scene. His body was taken to the Madang hospital morgue. The other passengers were not hurt.
Police found empty SP green beer cans at the scene and believe alcohol may have contributed to the accident.
Madang Police Commander Acting Superintendent Robert Baim called the crash a sad reminder of the dangers of drink-driving.
“This is election season, and we urge everyone to stay safe. Don’t drink and drive, and avoid overloading vehicles,” he said.
Police are continuing their investigation.
