OVER 500 FAMILIES DISPLACED BY FLOODS; FOOD GARDENS AND SCHOOL DESTROYED

HEAVY rains in Morobe province has caused flooding in Markham District, damaging homes, food gardens, cocoa fermentaries and a primary school leaving more than 500 families are affected, with damages estimated over K20,000.

The flood hit villages along the Yati River, including Bicidi, Lusples, Nawatrai, Badarian, Yonki, Rope, Baniscow and Sakarak.

Abraham Minzim from Ragiampun village said the water rose quickly and swept through everything.
“Our homes, cocoa trees and gardens are gone. We had to run for safety,” he said.

Ragiampun SDA Primary School was also damaged, affecting over 500 students.

Locals have asked for help from disaster officials but say they are still waiting.
“We need food, clean water and shelter,” Minzim said. “No help has come.”

Villagers are hoping for urgent support to rebuild
