DURING the recent Permanent Parliamentary Committee Inquiry on Communication at Rapopo Resort yesterday, the Chief Executive Officer of Kalang Advertising Limited, Mr. Bill Wartovo, highlighted some serious concerns about how social media is damaging education and morals.

Mr Wartovo pointed out that this major education crisis is being caused by too much screen time, and suggested strong fixes and technology controls to block bad content and limit kids’ internet use.

He emphasised that young people are losing basic learning skills and there should be some ways to encourage the children and the young generation back to reading habits.

The discussion showed a shocking truth about children choosing phones over books, and that their reading and writing skills were very bad.

This also revealed bigger worries about social media spreading lies, inappropriate content, and harming values.

He further called for nationwide education programs to fight online dangers.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Communications has reassured the media industry and the public that its ongoing inquiry into the standards and integrity of journalism in Papua New Guinea is not an attempt to limit press freedom.

Committee Chairman Hon. Marsh Narewec, MP, emphasised that the inquiry is aimed at strengthening ethical journalism, fighting misinformation, and restoring public trust in the media—not silencing dissent or criticism.

The next hearing will be in Alotau, Milne Bay Province commencing today July 2nd to the 4th, for Southern region.
