THE rehabilitation and redevelopment programs initiated at the Lombrum Naval Base in the Manus Island has boosted the local economy as confirmed by the Ministry of Defence and PNG Defense Force.

Led by PNG Defense Force commander Rear Admiral Philip Polewara, secretary John Akipe and Minister Dr Billy Joseph, who are part of decision making process in the PNG Defence Organisation, the project has benefited about 85% of local work force, while 10% outside of Manus Island and 5% are expatriates with sub contracts also awarded to local companies.

However, majority of the fundings came from Australia government, through the Lombrum Joint Initiative, which both countries signed in 2019, to boost the maritime security and to go inline with the Pacific Maritime Security Program (PMSP).

The facilities will be opened today by Prime Minister James Marape and Australian government delegates.
