LOMBRUM NAVAL BASE EXPANSION OPENED

THE Expansion of the Lombrum Naval Base in Manus Island, by joint Australia-PNG Defense Cooperation Program opened yesterday, Tuesday, 11th of August 2025 at the Lombrum Naval Base in Manus Island.
Prime Minister James Marape, including countryβs top military hierarchy and Australia were present to unveil the facilities, which cost more than K500m, funded by Australian government under the Defense Corporation programs.
The refurbished facilities includes new mass, health facilities, administration building, water treatment facilities and others.
From 2019, when the PNG and Australia government signed the agreement (MoU), it took almost six years to complete the redevelopment projects. The modern day facilities and technical development will enhance PNG Defense Force, coordinating their maritime duties.
The Lombrum Joint Initiative will help the PNG DF Coast-Guard Partol Unit with new instillation of surveillance and security systems as per under the Pacific Maritime Security Program, securing and protecting the waters, marine resources and Special Economic Zones.
