THE Catholic Church in PNG and the Pacific will witness tomorrow, from the Vatican, the Canonization of Blessed Peter Torot as Saint.

His Eminence John Cardinal Ribat confirmed with Kalang News, that the canonization of Peter Torot will be tomorrow 19th October, by Pope Leo XIV, following his announcement in June this year.

Peter To Rot a Papua New Guinean, from Rakunai Village in East New Britain province, served as a catechist in his village and was entrusted with the leadership of the local parish during World WarII when Imperial Japanese forces occupied the region and imprisoned Catholic missionaries. He publicly opposed the Japanese forces and continued to hold secret prayer services after Japanese restricted him from active pastoral service. He was executed by the Japanese in 1945.

His Eminence Cardinal Ribat says, Peter Torot was beatified on January 17th, 1995, and after 30 years, he will now be canonized as Saint tomorrow.

Sixteen Bishops from Papua New Guinea together with Cardinal Ribat have left Papua New Guinea, together with relatives and family members of Blessed Peter Torot will also be in Rome to witness  and take part in this significant event.

Cardinal Ribat also announced that in December the Catholic Parish in Rakunai will celebrate this event.
