THE National Institute of Standards and Industrial Technology (NISIT) has officially announced that the Papua New Guinea Customs Service will now be part of its governing board a move described as a major milestone in strengthening national regulatory coordination.

NISIT Acting Director General Joe Panga made the announcement during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two agencies.

He said bringing Customs onto the NISIT Board ensures that the country’s standards are practical, enforceable and aligned with regulatory needs.

Mr. Panga said the inclusion of Customs reflects the vital role it plays in protecting PNG from insufficient and unsafe products entering the market.

He added that this strategic partnership marks the first time in over ten years that NISIT has reconstituted its board, which will also include representatives from ICCC and IPA.

He says the move signals a shift toward a whole of government approach to standards and compliance, improving coordination across key economic and social sectors
