CRITICAL SHORTAGE OF CLINICAL DRUGS IN THE COUNTRY

OPOSITION leader and Member for Kiriwina Goodenough Douglas Tomuriesa has questioned the government on the current and continued issue of shortage of clinical drugs in the country, stating that there is a greater need for urgent attention to this alarming issue.

Mr Tomuriesa questioned the Minister for Health Elias Kapavore to clarify and verify the cause.

He further confirmed reports from hospitals in Milnebay. Hela and other hospitals in the country facing similar issues, stating the number of deaths in curable deseases have increased as a result of lack of medical drugs.

Health Minister Kapavore in his response. Stated that the collective reasons contributing to the shortage in medical drugs and supplies not only centered around funding, but the procurement process and also theft of medical drug from the area medical store.

Minister Kapavore confirm that a budget allocation of K295 million for medical supplies of which K150 Million has been received to procure medical supplies.

He says the ministry is aware of the current situation faced, and confirmed procurement processes is currently taking place to provide adequate supplies to all hospitals, Health centers and clinics

Minister Kapavore affirmed his department is in close consultations with the CEOs of Hospitals and the Area medical stores that are providing updates of the issue.
