THE Sopas-Yokonda road project constructed by the Wabag District Development Authority (WDDA) has for the first time since time immemorial provided a much shorter and reliable route for the people of the West Enga region to travel into the provincial capital.
The West Enga region comprises of the Lagaip, Kandep and Pogera-Paiela Districts with an approximate population of more than 250,000 people.
Local commuter Benji Opis described how this road link has opened up economic opportunities for the rural populace of the West Enga region.
“The people of West Enga will never easily forget the leadership of Dr Lino Tom for many generations to come,” Opis said.
He mentioned the truck loads packed with fresh produce from Yokonda ,Mulisos and Kinapolam villages in the Lagaip District making their way into Wabag town this morning which has never happened before as there was no road links before all these life changing developments taking place for the greater good of humanity.
The Sopas-Yokonda road project is being widened and simultaneously gravelled and is predicated to be an alternate route leading into the Pogera gold mine as the current state of the Wabag – Laiagam section of the Highlands Highway is deplorable and devastating with little attention from the national government and relevant authorities.
