KIUNG RFL EXPANDS COMP TO STRENGTHEN COMMUNITY

BY KENNY ROMANUS
THE Kiunga Rugby Football League (KRFL) has continued to grow in 2026, with more teams participating and the competition making a positive impact on the community across North Fly District.
KRFL President Mr. Boseni Katahano said this year’s season commenced in March and will wrap up in September.
A key milestone for the league this season has been the introduction of the women’s and schoolboys’ competitions. Seven women’s teams and six schoolboys’ teams are now competing, marking a significant step in the league’s development.
The men’s division consists of 12 teams, including 10 from Kiunga, one from Tabubil and one representing Ningerum.
According to Mr. Katahano, the competition has reached Round 11, with another seven rounds remaining before the finals.
He said rugby league has become a major weekend attraction in Kiunga, drawing strong crowds and creating an exciting atmosphere for players and supporters alike.
Matches for the women’s division and Men’s B Grade are played on Saturdays, while the Men’s A Grade fixtures are held on Sundays.
Mr. Katahano also highlighted the social benefits of the competition, saying it has helped keep young people engaged in sport while contributing to a decline in petty crime, anti-social behaviour, and alcohol and drug abuse.
He noted that many youths who previously spent Fridays drinking are now concentrating on training and preparing for their weekend fixtures, with most choosing to socialise only after Sunday matches.
Mr. Katahano said the enthusiasm for rugby league in Kiunga, Tabubil and Ningerum continues to grow, reflecting the sport’s important role in fostering youth participation, healthy living and stronger community ties throughout the district.
