DWU PORT MORESBY CAMPUS SET FOR 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

DIVINE Word University’s Port Moresby Campus is gearing up for the University’s 30th Anniversary celebrations, with a motorcade in Port Moresby this Saturday, August 15, marking the start of a week of activities.
The celebrations, held under the theme “Serving the Nation with Quality Education for Over 30 Years,” will end on August 22 with a corporate dinner at Vision City.
This year’s 30th anniversary celebrations are held under the banner “Festival of Legacy and Vision” and will take place simultaneously across DWU campuses and affiliated institutions across the country.
For Port Moresby Campus, the main celebration on August 21 will be held at the Taurama Aquatic Centre, followed by a corporate fundraising dinner at Vision City on August 22.
Funds raised from the dinner will support infrastructure development at the Port Moresby Campus.
Jebeddy Yapiku, committee leader for the 30th Anniversary Motorcade, said cars and motorcycles participating in the parade would be decorated to represent DWU’s past, present and future.
“We are calling on the corporate houses, students, alumni, staff, DWU family in Port Moresby and the general public to join us and light up the motorcade,” Mr Yapiku said.
The motorcade will begin at the DWU Port Moresby Campus before travelling through Manu, Sabama, Ela Beach, Kone Freeway, Hohola, Tokarara, Waigani and Gerehu before returning to the campus.
“Show us love and claps as we pass through your location,” Mr Yapiku said.
The main anniversary celebration on August 21 at the Taurama Aquatic Centre will feature exhibitions and entertainment designed to showcase the diversity of the DWU community, while reflecting on the university’s 30-year journey and its vision for the future.
Selina Don, who provided an overview of the programme, said the day will be divided into two main parts.
The morning programme, from 9am to 12pm, will focus on exhibitions, while the afternoon programme will feature entertainment.
Ms Don said the afternoon programme will highlight the cultural diversity of the university, with students representing different provinces of Papua New Guinea.
Another feature will be a skit depicting the history of DWU, taking the audience from its beginnings through its present development and into its vision for the future.
The final activity will be the corporate fundraising dinner at Vision City on August 22.
On August 21, 1996, the National Executive Council formally recognized Divine Word University as a private Catholic university.
Since attaining university status, DWU has continued to expand its academic programmes and national reach, contributing to higher education, research, teaching and learning, professional development and community engagement across Papua New Guinea.
The university now has campuses and affiliated institutions serving students in different parts of the country.
The Port Moresby Campus has traditionally focused on flexible learning and professional development and has recently expanded to include full-time studies in Business Studies.
As DWU celebrates three decades of service, the Port Moresby Campus says it remains committed to providing quality education grounded in excellence, values and service.
POM Campus Administrator, Dr Jerome Oko said DWU is service-oriented, with many of its graduates going on to serve the country in key sectors, including health and education.
He said the university had achieved significant growth over the past 30 years, particularly in expanding its reach, strengthening research and improving the delivery of quality education through technology.
Dr Oko said DWU is committed to continuing its service to Papua New Guinea over the next 30 years.
