MARKHAM DISTRICT BEGINS WEEK-LONG ASSESSMENT ON EL NINO IMPACT

By BRADLEY MARIORI

THE Markham District Development Authority has started a week-long assessment to check the impact of the El Niño dry spell on communities in the district.

District CEO, Mr. Willie Pilailo, said assessment teams were sent out on Monday to the four LLGs of Umi, Atzera, Onga Wafi and Leron-Wantoat.

The teams will visit wards in each LLG to collect data on food security, water, gardens, health and priority needs.

Mr. Pilailo said the information will help the DDA decide what support is needed and where to get help from the National Government and development partners.

In Atzera LLG, resident Naomi David of Sampubagin Village said banana gardens have been affected and water access has dropped.

Mr. Pilailo said all data will be compiled by the end of the week to guide Markham DDA’s El Niño response plan.
