PRIME MINISTER SAYS 51 YEAR OF INDEPENDENCE A TESTAMENT TO PNG RESILIENCE

BY NIGEL MADO

PRIME Minister James Marape says Papua New Guinea’s ability to maintain sovereignty, democracy and national unity for 51 years reflects the resilience of its people.

Speaking at Independence Hill ahead of the 51st Independence anniversary, Marape acknowledged the challenge of holding together a nation of more than 800 languages and diverse tribal structures, noting that many communities had little contact before independence.

He said PNG has sustained a free‑market economy, democratic institutions and successive governments despite natural disasters, civil unrest and global economic pressures.

Marape urged leaders, public servants and citizens to reflect on the achievements of the founding generation and commit to strengthening the union for future generations.

He said the first 51 years should be seen not only as a celebration of the past but as a foundation for the next 50 years.
