NCD Governor Powes Parkop has called on Papua New Guineans to remain united as the country marks 51 years of independence.

Speaking at the Independence celebrations at Unagi Oval in Port Moresby today, Governor Parkop reflected on Papua New Guinea’s journey over the past 51 years, describing the anniversary as an important milestone in the nation’s history.

He acknowledged the country’s rich cultural diversity, with more than 800 languages, customs, traditions, clans and tribes, saying despite these differences, Papua New Guineans have continued to come together as one people and one nation.

Governor Parkop said the country’s journey over the past 51 years has not been easy, with periods of challenges and difficulties like economic and social issues.

However, he said these challenges should not be an excuse for the country to stop moving forward.

Governor also acknowledged the traditional and contemporary performers, artists and people who came together for the celebrations, saying their participation demonstrates the culture, identity and spirit of Papua New Guineans.

Looking ahead, Governor Parkop challenged Papua New Guineans to think about what the country should look like over the next 50 years and to continue working towards a better future.

His message comes as Port Moresby hosts a full day of cultural performances, music and entertainment under the theme One People, One City, One Country.”
