NIO & IRC FORMALISE INTELLIGENCE-SHARING PARTNERSHIP

BY NIGEL MADO

PAPUA New Guinea’s National Intelligence Organization and Internal Revenue Commission have formalised their cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding providing for greater information sharing, joint operations and investigations.

NIO Director General Eddie Yodu says the agreement marks the first time the two organizations have established their long-standing working relationship through a formal written agreement.

Yodu says the MOU provides a proper foundation for cooperation based on shared goals and mutual trust.

Under the agreement, the NIO and IRC will cooperate in the sharing of information and intelligence, joint operations and investigations where appropriate, as well as capacity building and technical cooperation.

He said the partnership will also cover cybersecurity, financial intelligence and anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing frameworks.

Yodu says the two agencies have different mandates but share a common purpose of protecting Papua New Guinea.
He says the agreement will strengthen cooperation between the agencies as they work to address threats affecting national security and government revenue.

Yodu says matters involving criminal conduct uncovered through the cooperation will be referred to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary or other competent authorities for further action.

He says the MOU will be reviewed annually to ensure the partnership remains effective and up to date.
