NIO CONDUCTS SECURITY ASSESSMENTS IN PREPARATIONS FOR NGE27

BY NIGEL MADO
THE National Intelligence Organization is carrying out security assessments across Papua New Guinea ahead of the 2027 General Election, with intelligence gathering identified as one of its major tasks.
NIO Director General Eddie Yodu says the organization has already completed assessments in 12 of PNG’s 22 provinces, with another 10 provinces still to be covered.
Yodu told this Newsroom that the assessments will help the NIO identify potential security hotspots before the national election.
He stated that the information gathered through the assessments will be provided to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary and the PNG Defence Force to support their operational responsibilities during the election period.
Yodu said the NIO has a number of tasks underway, but election operations are among its biggest priorities as the country prepares for the 2027 polls.
Adding that the assessment process is expected to give the intelligence agency a clearer picture of areas that could face security challenges during the election.
Yodu said identifying potential hotspots is part of the NIO’s responsibility, while police and defence authorities are responsible for taking appropriate action based on the intelligence provided.
The NIO’s election preparations are being undertaken alongside its monitoring of other national security issues.
