BY MORTIMER YANGHARRY
The Wabag District Development Authority (WDDA) has began initial sealing roadworks for the Wabag – Ambum road project passing through Aipinimanda in Wabag District and connecting Wakenamada on the main Ambum road in the Ambum LLG of the Kompiam Ambum District.
WDDA Project Engineer Robin Pawa Wak confirmed that this road project has already commenced its sealing segments from Taetenges near Wabag town to Iritep and will continue into Aipinimanda before reaching the Kompiam Ambum District which is approximately a total of 13 kilometers of roadworks.
Wak mentioned that the base-course preparation is underway ahead of bitumen sealing on this road project.
He said that the first section, from TaeTenges to the Lai Bridge, was scheduled for sealing this week, while base-course works continue along the remaining sections.
Wak mentioned that the road project was initiated by the WDDA in 2018, beginning as a pilot track, which started in Wakenanda along the Ambum road in Kompiam Ambum District and ended at Taitenges just a few hundred meters away from the provincial capital of Wabag.
“A permanent steel bridge was built over the Lai River.to join Taitenges into Iritep on the other side of the mountain, leading down into Aipinimanda and across the Ambum River where a permanent bailey bridge was also built by WDDA to join into the Kompiam Ambum District,” he said.
Improved road access is expected to make it easier for locals to travel to Wabag town, transport agricultural produce and access essential services, including health and education facilities built by the WDDA such as the Iritep community health post, Yanaitin Primary School and the Tolem Primary School.
Plans are underway for the Lanekep, Yapokon and Kaleprae clans of the Yanaitin Tribe to build permanent homes under the Rural Housing Scheme with electricity connected under the rural electrification project all to be achieved before the issue of writs for the 2027 National General Elections.
