PNG LAUNCHES THREE CLIMATE CHANGE DOCUMENTS

PAPUA New Guinea through the Climate Change and Development Authority (CCDA) has launched three important climate change documents to strengthen its efforts to address climate change and track progress towards its climate change targets.
The documents include the country’s Third Nationally Determined Contribution, (NDC 3.0), its first Biennial Transparency Report, and the REDD Plus Technical Annex.
Speaking at the launch in Port Moresby today, Minister for Environment, Conservation and Climate Change, John Kaupa, says the new climate plan or NDC 3.0 2025 to 2035 sets targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the country’s resilience to climate impacts.
Climate Change and Development Authority Acting Managing Director Debra Sungi welcomed government representatives and development partners, saying the launch marked a shift from climate commitments towards accountable action.
The plan focuses on sectors including energy, transport, land use, agriculture, infrastructure, and health. It also formally includes loss and damage caused by climate change.
The first transparency report or National Inventory Document (NID) will help track Papua New Guinea’s greenhouse gas emissions and progress towards its climate commitments, while the REDD Plus Technical Annex focuses on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation.
The Minister on behalf of the Government says achieving these targets will require cooperation between government agencies, provincial authorities, development partners, and the private sector, as well as international climate finance and technology.
