JOINT OPERATION LAUNCHED TO RECAPTURE 28 ESCAPEES FROM KEREVAT

TWENTY-EIGHT prisoners are still at large following the recent break out of a total of 38 remandees from the Kerevat Prison in East New Britain province last week.
Correctional Service Commissioner Noel Sarei have announced a joint operation launched to recapture the 28 Prison escapees who are still at large, 8 escapees have been recaptured, 1 was shot dead, and another was killed by people who he had offended.
Commissioner Sarei in confirming the 38 detainees, 36 are District court remandees, and 2 are National Court remandees who dashed for freedom after cutting through the ventilation rail of a cell block and through the compound security fence.
Commissioner Sarei told the media yesterday, that he has also instructed the Assistant Commissioner NGI and the Commanding Officer to engage local leaders in the communities the escapees are from to assist, and is calling on the escapees to surrender.
An investigation team appointed by the Commissioner is already on the ground and will report its findings.
He made the confirmation during a press conference at CS Headquarters in Port Moresby today.
