RESIDENTS RALLY TO PROTECT WATER SOURCE DURING DROUGHT

DOZENS of residents from Ward 5 and across Kiunga Town joined forces on Sunday to clean and rehabilitate the Sare Kona drinking water source, highlighting the community’s commitment to safeguarding a vital water supply amid the continuing El Niño drought.

The community-led exercise involved clearing and cleaning the water well, repairing the pathway leading to the collection point, and improving access to ensure residents can safely collect drinking water.

The initiative was coordinated by Ward 5 Councillor and Deputy Mayor of Kiunga Town, Gisio Dengri, who encouraged everyone relying on the Sare Kona water source to participate in the cleanup.

Following the successful exercise, Councillor Dengri thanked all volunteers for their dedication and strong community spirit.

He said the overwhelming support shown by residents demonstrated a shared sense of responsibility for protecting one of Kiunga’s most important sources of drinking water.

According to Councillor Dengri, the cleanup has significantly improved the condition of the water source, making it cleaner, safer and easier for families to access.

He also called on residents to continue caring for the facility by maintaining cleanliness and working together to preserve the water source for future generations.

With drought conditions continuing to affect many parts of Western Province, Sare Kona has become an essential source of drinking water for many households, making regular maintenance and community participation critical to ensuring a reliable supply of safe water.

The cleanup was held between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., with residents responding positively to the call for voluntary community service.
