COURT DISMISSED “STAY ORDER”; NEW EC TO BE SWORN IN TODAY

A benchmark Supreme Court decision yesterday, Wednesday, the 5th of August 2026 has settled many doubts, allowing the incoming PNG Electoral Commission, Commissioner Dr Nicole Haley to be formally sworn-in and take office.
In a single supreme court ruling yesterday, Judge justice Derek Hartshorn dismissed a stay application brought against the newly appointed EC by a Local Level Government (LLG) from Gulf.
Justice Derek Hartshorn said he was not satisfied with the presentation enclosed in the Application by Moripi LLG of Gulf, and he further went on to refuse the Stay Order.
After nearly a month since her appointment in early July, Dr Nicole Haley will now take office, with the swearing‑in ceremony to be witnessed this afternoon at Government House, Konedobu, by Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika.
The swearing in today of the newly appointed Electoral Commissioner Dr Nicole Hailey, will pave way for her to resume office and duties in preparation for the much-anticipated 2027 National General Election.
The swearing-in and signing of the instruments will be coordinated by Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika, in the absence of Governor General Sir Bob Dabae this afternoon at 2pm.
