YODU LINKS FINANCIAL CRIME TO NATIONAL SECURITY

BY NIGEL MADO
NATIONAL Intelligence Organization Director General Eddie Yodu says threats to Papua New Guinea’s national security and threats to government revenue are increasingly interconnected.
During the signing of the MOU with the Internal Revenue Commission he said tax evasion, illicit financial flows, money laundering, terrorism financing, smuggling and corruption can weaken the country’s economy and sovereignty.
He made the remarks as the NIO and Internal Revenue Commission formalised their cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding.
Yodu stated that the nature of these threats means no single government agency can effectively confront them alone.
He added that the two agencies must move away from working in isolation and strengthen cooperation in areas involving financial intelligence and national security.
Yodu says strengthening cooperation between the agencies will help protect government revenue while contributing to a more resilient country
