BARRAS COACH RESIGNS
By Ricky Israel
In a surprising turn of events, the Head Coach of the men’s national cricket team, Tatenda Taibu, has resigned from his position.
According to Cricket PNG’s media unit, Coach Taibu stepped down in support of the players and staff, who have been calling for the removal of CEO Richard Done due to ongoing allegations of misconduct.
The resignation comes after no action was taken by the PNG Cricket Board to address the concerns raised.
Coach Taibu, who is currently in the United Kingdom, did not return after his holiday and chose to resign instead.
It is understood that the ongoing standoff between Cricket PNG and the players and staff led to his decision.
This is a huge blow for cricket in Papua New Guinea. Taibu, a former Zimbabwean cricketer and the youngest Test captain in ICC history, took over as head coach of the PNG Barramundis in August 2023.
During his time with the team, he worked hard to improve the players’ performance and create a positive atmosphere within the squad.
He led the team in various regional and international T20 and ODI matches, including last year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup held in the US and West Indies.
FM100 Sports attempted to contact Coach Taibu for a comment, but there was no response.
