ROAD FUNDING IN QUESTION AS MINISTER ASSURES PROGRESS

By Naomi TAKOMA
The Member for Kainantu, William Hagahuno, has raised concerns over the delay in funding for the Kainantu-Okapa-Lufa-Bena road, an essential economic link in the Eastern Highlands.
Speaking in Parliament, Hagahuno questioned the Minister for Works and Highways, Solan Mirisim, on the status of an 87-million-kina allocation under the Connect PNG program. He revealed that despite the government’s commitment, no funding has been received.
“This road does not serve only my district; it serves Okapa, Lufa, and Ungai Bena. We just got the notice, but no funding. When will the Minister for Works think of the Eastern Highlands people?” Hagahuno asked.
He stressed the road’s importance in supporting coffee farmers and local agriculture, adding that other areas with less economic significance have received funding.
In response, Minister Mirisim acknowledged the road’s significance and assured that the government remains committed to its development. He cited security concerns as a major setback, noting that an officer was killed in the area, causing delays in ADB-funded work.
“Funding has been approved under ADB and will soon go to tender. I appeal to the people of the five districts benefiting from this road to support progress so we can continue work,” Mirisim said.
He added that further road expansions, including a four-lane upgrade in Goroka town, are in the pipeline under the Connect PNG initiative.
