THE 5th Sel Kambang Festival that was officially launched on Monday, June 22, at Ningerum Station, the administrative centre of Ningerum LLG, is into its third day.
North Fly MP and festival patron James Donald opened the festival, that serves to showcase North Fly District’s rich cultural diversity and bringing together various tribal groups to display their traditional dances, songs, customs and arts while fostering unity and promoting tourism across the district.
Cultural groups representing the district’s major tribes have been in celebration, showcasing their traditional attire, performing songs and dances to the rhythmic sounds of kundu drums, creating a festive atmosphere.
The first day of the festival focused on welcoming guests and officially opening the event, with the main cultural activities scheduled to continue throughout the week.
Ningerum LLG Manager Takop Nambri welcomed participants and visitors, acknowledging guests from outside the district, including invited cultural performers, musicians and comedians.
North Fly District Culture and Tourism Coordinator Jacky Nick praised the organising committee for successfully preparing the event and expressed appreciation to government agencies for their financial support.
He also thanked North Fly MP James Donald for his ongoing support in promoting culture and tourism in the district.
During the ceremony, Mr Donald introduced special guests and entertainers, including Gedix Atege, Taita Maraga and the Omokoi Comedians, who are expected to entertain festivalgoers during the celebrations.
He commended the organising committee for the successful arrangements and emphasized the importance of preserving the district’s cultural heritage for future generations.
“As Papua New Guinea progresses and technology continues to influence society, we must encourage our young people to safeguard and preserve our traditions and cultural identity so that they are not lost to modern influences,” Mr Donald said.
