NAWAEB MP CALLS FOR INCLUSIVE APPROACH TO GBV

Nawaeb MP Theo Pelgen has urged for a broader approach to addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV), emphasizing that both women and men can be victims. Speaking at a GBV-related event, Pelgen voiced his support for the GBV board while questioning the general perception of the issue.
“I stand here this to show my utmost support to the Chairman and the board of the GBV,” he said. “Now I ask everybody here—what is GBV? Is it rape? Is it murder or an assault on a woman? We often hear about women being the primary victims, but we must also acknowledge the silent victims—men.”
Pelgen highlighted that GBV includes various forms of abuse, such as bullying in schools and spitting on someone, which can leave lasting psychological scars. He stressed the need for men to speak up about their experiences, as many suffer in silence due to societal expectations.
“Men often do not seek help because they feel ashamed. It is not seen as ‘manly’ to express such struggles, yet this silence can lead to tragic outcomes,” he added.
Pelgen called on the GBV board to include references to boys and men in their discussions and publications, ensuring a truly inclusive approach to tackling GBV.
