MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA FRATERNITY WELCOMED TO 2026 MEDIA SUMMIT

THE PNG Media Summit 2026 is currently underway at the Crowne Hotel in Port Moresby bringing together leaders and members of the media industry from both the Pacific and locally.

Neville Choi, President of the Media Council of PNG officially welcomed participants from the media fraternity attending the one day summit.

Organised by Women In Media PNG, this year’s summit carries the theme, “Press Freedom through Human Rights, Security & Innovation: Facts and Verification to NGE2027 & Beyond”.

Mr Choi highlighted the urgency of the summit’s agenda, saying as the media stand on the cusp of a new era defined by artificial intelligence and shifting digital boundaries, its commitment to facts and verification has never been more critical.

An expert from the Centre for International Security and Cooperation, Mr Michael Hsieh (say pronounse) in his presentation, highlighted that Artificial Intelligence was created by human like many other things in the country.

He said, international newsroom has already integrated AI into their procedures, increasing speed in news production, however pointed out that the risks are in fake content.

Mr Hsieh cautioned journalists to be very mindful of deep fake content, urging them to use human intelligence along with experience to identify and refute deep fake content.

The summit continues into the day with presentations and panel discussions.
