FIFTEEN reporters received certificate yesterday after a week-long Sports Commentary Training delivered by ABC International Development through its Media Development Initiative at the Stanley Hotel in Port Moresby.
The training provided participants with practical skills in live sports commentary while strengthening awareness of inclusive and professional media practice.
It aims to help media professionals and sports broadcasters apply high-quality reporting standards, including better coverage of women’s sport.
Speaking during the event, Counsellor Subnational and Accountability from Australian High Commission Graig Gilles said the training helps PNG sports journalists develop skills to deliver the quality insight of sports to commentary fans across PNG.
He said it also helps commentators ensure audiences across PNG get coverage that is engaging and fair.
Gilles stress to female participants that the training gives them the tools to report fairly, balance, professionally stories, and ensure that women athletes are recognised for their achievements.
He encouraged the newly trained commentators to use their skills to campaign for women’s inclusion and give women’s sport the spotlight it deserves.
ABCID-PNG Team Leader Hare Haro commended participants for their enthusiasm, openness and willingness to challenge existing norms.
She adds and expressed thanks to trainers, coordinators, the support team and organising partners for their guidance and dedication, which she said was instrumental in making the training a success.
This even was attended by representatives from the Australian High Commission, Australian Broadcasting Corporation International Development (ABCID), and the Media Council of Papua New Guinea and Representative from PNG Media Houses.
