POLICE ON THE HUNT FOR UNITECH ATTACK SUSPECTS

POLICE are working around the clock to identify and arrest those responsible for the recent attack at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology (UniTech), as authorities move to strengthen campus security.

Lae Metropolitan Superintendent James Luan said investigators have received information on several possible suspects and are now gathering additional evidence before making arrests.

Superintendent Luan said police had attended a security meeting at the university following an invitation from the institution’s administration. The meeting was attended by Prime Minister and Lae MP James Marape, university management, members of the university council, student representatives, and police.

He said discussions focused on both immediate and long-term measures to improve security for students and staff.

According to Superintendent Luan, police will continue to support the university through increased collaboration, while the institution is reviewing security arrangements within the campus, including the protection of student accommodation and university facilities.

He clarified that the attack occurred in the early hours of July 18 near the female accommodation area adjacent to a nearby settlement. Although police have identified persons of interest, Superintendent Luan said investigators require additional information before charges can be laid.
