RESPECT THE CONSTITUTION AND LAW:GG

GOVERNOR-General Sir Bob Dadae has called for stronger respect for Papua New Guinea’s Constitution, laws and democratic institutions, warning that the country’s democracy must be protected for future generations.

Sir Bob made the call during the Flag Lowering Ceremony at Sir Hubert Murray Stadium in Port Moresby as Papua New Guinea marked its 51st Independence Anniversary.

He described democracy as a precious but fragile national asset and said its strength depended on citizens respecting the law, the rights of others and the principles of justice and fairness.

The Governor-General said Papua New Guinea’s Constitution provides the foundation for national sovereignty and establishes the parameters within which the country is governed.

Sir Bob said Papua New Guineans must fully understand and embrace these principles in order to strengthen their sense of identity and nationhood.

His remarks also connected constitutional governance with next year’s National General Election.

He said the government elected in 2027 would set the benchmark for the country’s development agenda for the following five years and urged citizens to make meaningful and responsible choices at the polls.

He also called for stronger governance, transparency and honesty in the conduct of government and business, alongside improvements in essential services and investment in education, healthcare and the country’s people.
