The New Ireland Provincial Government has presented a cheque of K300,000 to New Hanover High School (NHHS) on Lovongai island for the completion of its boys dormitory following the destruction caused by Cyclone Maila to its original structure in April.
Governor Byron Chan, presented the cheque to Provincial Executive Council (PEC) Chairman for Primary Industry, Ian Kusak, which will be deposited into the school’s operating account to see to the completion of this vital infrastructure.
Kusak says the funding is part of the K500,000 commitment from the Provincial Government, where the balance of K200,000 will be made available in the coming week.
“With the availability of funds, we will see to the completion of the much needed accommodation infrastructure by the end of October, ensuring that the 2027 academic year has no disruptions due to boarding placements for male pupils,” Kusak said.
The funding is part of the Chan-Kolivos government’s broader support for education infrastructure across the province.
Recently, the Provincial Administration also provided K252,000 to Tanir High School on Tanga Island in the Namatanai District for the construction of a classroom complex.
The school welcomed the assistance, saying it would help complete a much-needed infrastructure as it prepares to conclude the 2026 academic year.
Governor Chan says education remained a priority for his administration, pointing to the Provincial Government’s School Fee Subsidy program for tertiary schools, where ten batches of payments have already been made to institutions around the country.
Last week’s batch of payment brings the total to over K2 million invested so far, leaving four more installations left to complete the 2026 academic year.
“Education has always been a priority under the late Sir Julius Chan’s administration. We are carrying on that legacy for the children of greater New Ireland Province, to ensure we have an educated population as we pursue our long term autonomy agenda,” he said.
The Governor says continued investment in education was essential to improving learning opportunities for young people and building an educated population capable of contributing to New Island’s future development.
