RESIDENTS of Lou Island in Manus Province are calling for urgent firefighting assistance as wildfires continue to threaten villages, forests, gardens and livelihoods.
In an appeal, Lou Island representative Kireni Sparks-Ngenge says the fires have been burning for more than a week, with community members struggling to contain the blaze due to a lack of equipment and resources.
She says the situation has become increasingly dangerous, with hot, dry and windy conditions contributing to the spread of the fires towards Rei and Lako villages.
Sparks-Ngenge says residents have been working tirelessly to fight the fires but are now struggling to control their spread.
The Lou Island Bushfire Response Coordinating Team is calling for urgent assistance, including firefighting equipment such as monsoon buckets, high-volume water pumps and technical support to assess fire boundaries and establish containment lines.
The team is also appealing for emergency support from Australia and other relevant authorities to help prevent further damage and protect lives and properties.
