PNG AMBULANCE TRAINING PROGRAM WINS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

A Papua New Guinea–developed ambulance training program has earned regional recognition for building a skilled, sustainable, and locally trained pre‑hospital emergency care workforce.
The National St John Ambulance Service received the Excellence in Staff Development Award at the Council of Ambulance Authorities’ 2026 Awards for Excellence, marking its second consecutive win.
The award honoured the National Ambulance Education College (NAEC): Building PNG’s Pre‑hospital Workforce initiative, which trains Papua New Guineans under nationally recognised standards aligned with international best practice.
The program reduces reliance on overseas trainers, develops locally relevant courses, and establishes career pathways for ambulance officers.
CAA CEO Andrew Tombs congratulated St John, praising its dedication to strengthening services and fostering long‑term sustainability.
A PNG delegation, including Commander Alexander Dimain, educators Anthony Pryke, Stevie Nion, Charles Wakinau, Vagi Ila, and Paramedic Specialist Advisor Glen Beasly, presented at the CAA Congress. Paramedic Olivia Galiano and educator Charles Wakinau also shared their research on Navigating Sorcery Beliefs in Pre‑hospital Care.
