GOVERNMENT UNVEILS NEW FOREIGN POLICY BLUEPRINT

BY NIGEL MADO
PAPUA New Guinea has launched a new Foreign Policy White Paper, marking a significant shift in how the country will engage with the world amoung rapid global change.
Prime Minister James Marape described the policy as both “timely and strategic,” aimed at guiding PNG through evolving global dynamics driven by technology, economic shifts, and geopolitical tensions.
The policy comes as the country celebrates its 50th year of independence, providing what the Prime Minister calls a “reset point” to reflect on the past while preparing for the future.
He said the document captures PNG’s journey since 1975 but more importantly outlines how the nation will position itself in a world that is now more interconnected and complex than ever before.
Marape stressed that decisions made under this policy will be more deliberate and forward-looking, ensuring the country is not “caught by surprise” in global affairs.
He said the White Paper is expected to guide diplomatic engagement, economic partnerships, and national security priorities for years to come, forming a long-term framework that transcends political leadership changes.
