BORAM AIRPORT TEMPORARY CLOSURE LIFTED, AIR NIUGINI RESUMES FLIGHTS

FOLLOWING the completion of a comprehensive safety and security risk assessment, the temporary closure of Wewak Airport has now been lifted.
National Airports Corporation Acting Managing Director and CEO, Dominic Kaumu says the temporary closure on Boram airport was officially lifted at 4 pm on Sunday 1st March.
Kaumu says the decision to reopen the airport was made after Management was satisfied that all identified safety and security risks had been appropriately addressed.
It has also been determined that compliance with aviation security and aerodrome certification requirements has been restored.
Kaumu says the Police and Defence Force have conducted investigations into the recent incident and have apprehended suspects in connection with the unlawful activities.
He adds that Police and PNGDF personnel will continue to provide patrols around the airport perimeter and surrounding areas to ensure the safe and secure resumption of operations.
Meanwhile, Air Niugini has also advised of flights resumptions to and from Boram Airport, as of this morning, Monday 02 March 2026, following the restoration of security measures at the airport.
Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alan Milne, acknowledged the swift restoration efforts and thanked customers for their patience and understanding.
“We are pleased to have safely resumed services into Wewak following the completion of repairs and the lifting of the NOTAM by the National Airports Corporation. I commend the coordinated efforts of NAC, Aviation Security, law enforcement authorities and our staff in restoring operations within a short timeframe.
Safety and security remain our highest priorities as we work diligently to return to normal operations.”
Air Niugini staff have returned to duty and flights have recommenced. This morning’s service was operated by the aircraft that remained overnight in Vanimo. The flight departed Vanimo for Wewak, uplifted passengers, and then continued onward to Port Moresby.
