A GROUP of Papua New Guineans based in Brisbane, Australia has continued delivering life changing medical equipment and school supplies to the province since its inception in 2017.

This year is no difference as it marked a remarkable 9-year journey of their act of kindness in these essential items all packed in a 40-foot container from Australia.

The journey began with four wheelchairs delivered to Vunapope Hospital in 2017 and since then, the group’s efforts have grown exponentially, with an annual delivery of a 40-foot container of essential items, except during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In 2017, we decided to bring four wheelchairs,” said Mrs. Elsie Banning, President of the East New Britain QLD Community Group. “Since then, we’ve been delivering one 40-foot container each year, except during COVID.”

The group’s dedication is truly inspiring, raising over $16,000 annually to fund these deliveries. Their commitment has made a huge difference in the lives of many in East New Britain.

The impact of their work extends beyond medical equipment. In 2018, during a visit to Nonga Hospital, Mrs. Banning asked the nurses what they needed most. The answer was simple yet vital: gloves.

“I made a speech and asked the nurses, if today you wanted something—anything for the hospital—what would it be? And the answer was gloves,” Bainning recalled.

Determined to meet this need, the group included 23,000 gloves in their next container delivery, greatly improving the hospital’s operations.

In addition to medical supplies, the group collaborates with Rotary and Lions Clubs to provide free eye exams and glasses, helping to restore sight and improve the quality of life for countless individuals.

“We’ve supplied reading glasses and other eye care supplies to various hospitals and testing centers. This has made a huge difference,” Banning explained.

Recognizing the need for educational resources, they are now planning to build a resource center for teachers at Kalamanagunan Primary School to further expand their support for the community.

“We’re committed to bridging the gap left by the government in providing resources and support to the community,” Banning stated.

Recently, the group made another significant contribution. At the 2024 Christmas Party on December 1st, Elsie and her daughter Amy delivered a new defibrillator to the staff at Vunapope Hospital following the request in November by Kate, a dedicated paramedic from St John’s, who reached out regarding the urgent need for an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) at Vunapope Hospital’s Emergency Department. The funds raised during the Christmas gathering were immediately dedicated to this cause, allowing for the timely delivery just in time for Christmas.

Kate demonstrated how to use the device, ensuring the Vunapope team is equipped to provide life-saving care. This defibrillator is the only one currently available in the province.

“We wouldn’t have it any other way,” Bainning said, beaming with pride. “The joy and gratitude we see in the faces of the recipients make all the hard work and fundraising efforts worth it. We are thankful to our group and supporters in Brisbane for making this possible.”

As they continue their mission to support the people of East New Britain, their story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating the power of community, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to making a difference in the world.
