MERI SAFE HAUS TO BE ESTABLISHED IN YANGOR/SAUSSIA DISTRICT

Women in Yangoru/Saussia district of East Sepik Province who have been suffering from Gender Based Violence (GBV) with no one to turn to for help, the member for Yangoru-Saussia District, Richard Maru has heard the cry of his women and girls and have entered a partnership with the branch of the national government responsible for GBV and community development, Department of Community Development, Youth and Religion to establish a safe haus for the abused women in the district.

The partnership and the marking of a new era of the women in the Yangoru Saussia district, which saw the attendance of Minster for Community Development, Youth and Religion, Jason Peter, Secretary for the Department, Jerry Ubase, Chief Executive Officer of the Yangoru Saussia DDA and women representatives from district.

Yangoru/Saussia District MP Richard Maru said, the women in Yangoru have been suffering at the hands of their spouses for so long, this time he has heard the cry of his women and has entered this partnership to establish a safe haus for women, in an effort to stamp out violence against women and girls in the district.

The Minister for Community Development, Youth and Development, Jason Peter in giving his remarks said this partnership aligns with the Department’s Medium Term Development Plan to establish 80 safe houses for women in the country by 2027.

He adds that there are 6 safe houses for women in East Sepik Province, all of which are initiatives of Non-Government Organizations and development partners. This is the first of kind as it is a first safe haus for women in the district and it also the first government initiative.

Local Yangoru Women, Amanda Kumani who has been providing her home as a safe haus for the abused women in the district for the past 23 years said finally, MP Maru has heard her cries and the cries of the women in the district.

MP Maru said the proposed portion that the meri safe haus will be built on will be next to the proposed Yangoru police station and as soon as the accounts open, funds will be allocated accordingly to see the ground work of the projects being unfolded.
