One alleged suspect is confirmed dead, and one civilian injured, following an armed robbery infront of Bank South Pacific (BSP) Buka Branch, yesterday.
Acting Chief Inspector Superintendant Regional Operations and Acting Chief of Bougainville Police Service James Pius has confirmed that the identity of the deceased perpetrator is known as James Besium and is a male adult.
He says police investigation revealed that admin officer Cynthia Sikoa of Sankamap Export Limited, was held up and attacked and robbed off, the cash withdrawn from BSP Paramount Banking, yesterday.
After withdrawing from BSP, she got in the company vehicle which was parked infront of the Bank and was attacked and robbed. It is understood that the four suspects were armed with 3 X high-powered rifles.
Police has confirmed that the three suspects including the taxi driver escaped with K50,000.00 (PG Kina) in cash. Chief Inspector Pius added that the taxi used in the robbery has been captured and in police custody with the driver in custody for questioning.
He also added that the incident resulted in one confirmed fatality believed to be a member of the armed robbery group, who was late to escape and thus was shot by the gang members and injuring one civilian in the process.
“The number and description of perpetrators are currently unknown, and police will require further investigation,” he added.
Chief Inspector Pius reiterated that police are now initiating an immediate investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators involved. An active police investigation is currently underway.
Chief Inspector Pius is appealing to the public to bring any information that might involve the public and surrender to the police.
He said such behavior can prevent service and investment into the region.
“I condemned such actions of robbers or criminals by their action to tarnish the image of Bougainville ABG and peace loving people of the Bougainville Region.
“Any details, no matter how insignificant they may seem, could be valuable,” he added.
