A dedicated volunteer in Oro Province, has raised concerns about the endangered Alexander Birdwing butterfly, a rare species increasingly targeted by illegal collectors. This butterfly, highly valued in global markets, particularly in China and Europe, is at risk of extinction due to growing demand.

Ahi Matue, initially tasked with marketing the butterfly to tourists, discovered that foreign visitors were not only admiring but also stealing the butterfly’s larvae and eggs for the illegal trade.

Despite his efforts to establish a breeding program, he found limited support from the local community, raising doubts about the species’ survival.

The Alexander Birdwing butterfly, which can sell for up to £5,000 per butterfly which is close to K30, 000 in European markets, has become a prime target for collectors.

Matue is calling for urgent conservation efforts and greater community involvement to protect this unique and valuable species from further exploitation.
