EH PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL MAKES HISTORY IN SUCCEFUL FIRST NEUROSURGICAL PROCEDURES

THE Eastern Highlands Provincial Specialist Hospital has successfully carried out its first neurosurgical procedures outside Port Moresby.
Eastern Highlands Provincial Health Authority CEO Dr. Pomuso Warima says the achievement marks a major milestone in specialist healthcare for the province.
A surgical team led by Port Moresby General Hospital’s Head of Neurosurgery, Dr. Benjamin Thomas, completed five complex operations, including brain and spinal tumour surgeries.
Among the patients was a three-year-old girl whose life-threatening brain tumour was successfully removed after a two-and-a-half-day operation.
According to Dr Thomas the new service will reduce the need for patients from the Highlands to travel to Port Moresby or overseas for specialist brain surgery and is expected to save more lives.
