ROAD WORK PROGRESS TO ENHANCE PNG-INDONESA BORDER LINK

UNDER the Connect PNG Program, funded through the Ok Tedi Mining Limited Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme (OTML ITCS), the Alice Pit-Butmambin-Yetetkun Road is expected to play a significant role in improving transport connectivity between North Fly District in Western Province, Papua New Guinea, and Boven Digoel District in the Republic of Indonesia.
The project is now progressing with road widening, maintenance works, and graveling to provide a safer and more reliable route throughout the year.
The project was first initiated several years ago through a joint effort by the Fly River Provincial Government under Governor Taboi Awi Yotto and the North Fly District Development Authority (NFDDA), headed by North Fly MP James Donald.
The primary objective of the road is to improve access for isolated border communities while promoting trade, stimulating economic growth, and making essential government services more accessible.
When completed, the road will establish a stronger land connection between Papua New Guinea and Indonesia, making travel easier for border residents and encouraging increased cross-border trade and community interaction.
The improved road network is also expected to enhance access to schools, health facilities, markets, and other essential services for communities along the route, while further strengthening social and economic relationships between North Fly District and Boven Digoel District.
Leaders say the development is an important investment in border infrastructure and reflects the broader goals of the Connect PNG Program to improve road connectivity across Western Province.
Work on the road is continuing, with the project expected to deliver lasting economic and social benefits to communities on both sides of the PNG-Indonesia border.
